COLUMBUS, Ohio — Four people are safe after a fire broke out at a home in north Columbus early Christmas morning, officials said.
Firefighters with the Columbus Division of Fire were called to the home in the 2200 block of Jefferson Avenue, just south of East Hudson Street, sometime before 4:50 a.m.
Columbus Fire Battalion Chief Jeff Geitter said the fire appeared to have started on the first floor and there were four people inside at the time.
Two people were able to escape the fire. The two people were briefly trapped inside the basement, but Geitter said they were able to get out of the house.
Fire officials said two people were taken to the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center to be treated for smoke inhalation. They are expected to be OK. Geitter said a dog did not make it out of the fire.
Firefighters were able to contain the fire, but the cause of it is under investigation.
