Newark police release details of events leading up to kidnapping of 1-year-old girl

Sewak Tiwari, 19, is charged with kidnapping.

NEWARK, Ohio — The Newark Division of Police released additional details on Friday about the events leading up to the abduction of a 1-year-old girl.

Newark Police Sgt. Chuck Wilhelm said officers were in touch with the child’s mother earlier in the day on Thursday when she reported a domestic dispute involving 19-year-old Sewak Tiwari. Authorities said Tiwari was the child’s non-custodial father.

The mother told police that she believed Tiwari was returning to his home with the child at that time and he had allegedly made threats to harm the child and himself. Additionally, he claimed to have removed the license plates from his vehicle to prevent police from finding him.

Wilhelm said detectives investigated the incident and an Amber Alert was issued around 4:50 p.m.

Officers with the Columbus Division of Police found a Honda Pilot off Morse Road and Tiwari and the child at a hotel in the area.

The child was unharmed and Tiwari was taken into custody without further incident.  The Amber Alert was canceled around 6:55 p.m.

Tiwari is charged with kidnapping. He is being held on a $750,000 bond.
