Newark High School honors graduating seniors through social media spotlights

Senior year of high school is often full of excitement and apprehension, but for the class of 2020 this school year was truly one of a kind.

NEWARK, Ohio — Senior year of high school is often full of excitement and apprehension, but for the class of 2020, this school year was truly one of a kind.

Cassidy Chadock said COVID-19 cut her senior year at Newark High School short. Traditions like prom, banquets, even graduation are still in the air and she says its hard to ignore the fact that it feels like her class is missing out on a milestone.

“I’m nervous but I’m trying to stay hopeful and I’m trying to stay positive about the whole situation,” Chadock said.

But school counselors at Newark High School wanted to ensure those students and their parents had a special moment.

“We just put out the word to the seniors and parents that we would be spotlighting seniors,” Counselor Scott Koebel said.

One by one staff members began posting the spotlight features. The posts serve a chance for each student to be recognized, years of involvement acknowledged and a chance for community members to congratulate their graduating seniors.

“The response has been really positive. We’ve probably had about 50 postings so far a number of likes and shares," Koebel said. "it’s just a small way we can celebrate these individual seniors."
