NEWARK, Ohio — All Monday and Tuesday classes at Newark High School are canceled after a fire broke out Saturday night.
The fire appeared to have been caused by an electrical short from a mini fridge on the northeast side of the school, according to a spokesperson from the school district. While the fire was contained within one classroom, the district said there is smoke and water damage throughout the school's F wing.
No injuries were reported from the incident and no students or staff were in the area at the time of the fire.
While the fire department was responding on Saturday, wrestling sectionals were being held in the school's gymnasium, which was located in another area of the building far from the fire. The beginning of sectionals was delayed while first responders worked to resolve the fire.
All other schools in the district will be in session Monday and Tuesday. High school classes are expected to resume on Wednesday.
The district said in a statement that a professional cleaning company is working in the building now and air quality testing will be done before classes begin again. Additionally, HVAC filters will be changed and the system will be assessed.
The F wing will be closed until further notice as the school works on plans for classes normally held there.
Both gyms, K building and Commons will remain open throughout the week for practices and scheduled activities.
