A new year means new laws for Ohio.
One of them makes it legal to drive a golf cart on any street within the state with a speed limit of 35 mph or less.
“If you're going a short distance that's fine. But why would you want to use one out on the road?,” said Cheryl Mox, who lives in Choctaw Lake and owns a golf cart.
“We've had this about 4 years now I guess,” said Mox.
Mox says she and her partner bought the cart to help them get around.
“I'm 68,” she said. “My girlfriend's 70 and she's got a bad back.”
More golf carts may soon hit Ohio roadways. There’s a new law that makes it legal to drive a cart alongside average-sized cars. The law went into effect January 1, 2017.
The state has stiff stipulations. In order to be street legal, the cart must pass an inspection, have a title and license plates.
The cart must also have a windshield, head lights, tail lights and a horn.
“I think it's a bunch of bologna,” Mox said. “Like we live here, in a private section, it's all private owned and I don't know if they are going to enforce this here or not.”
Right now, Mox only drives her golf cart within her neighborhood. Mox says the residential association does not have such stipulations to drive carts within the subdivision. However, if the cart does not have lights, it is prohibited in the dark.
