A New Albany doctor has been indicted on charges including aggravated drug trafficking, aggravated funding of drug trafficking, theft, insurance fraud, telecommunications fraud and falsification, according to the Franklin County prosecutor’s office.

Franklin County prosecutor Ron O’Brien said 56-year-old Khaled Amr was indicted on 28 counts on Wednesday.

O’Brien said Amr ran a pain management facility called Columbus Pain Specialists.

The local Drug Enforcement Administration task force initially focused on Amr after an allegation of over-prescribing opioid medication, O’Brien said.

It is alleged Amr received a cash kickback for the sale of opioid pills after providing the prescription for them, according to O’Brien.

“During a search warrant of the doctor’s residence in June 2018, investigators also unearthed evidence of alleged financial fraud that the doctor was involved with as well as an alleged insurance theft involving a scheme to fake a break-in of the doctor’s office and theft of medical equipment in order to file a fraudulent insurance claim,” O’Brien said.

O’Brien said the corrupt activity allegedly happened between 2012 and 2019.

Amr was arrested and is in custody at the Franklin County jail.
