COLUMBUS, Ohio — Short North resident Ronald Hayward woke up around 2:30 Sunday morning to the sound of gunshots.
“It sounded really close so I ducked down,” he said.
His neighbor had a bullet come through their window.
“When I looked out the window I just saw ambulances coming,” Hayward said.
Outside his window, ten people had been shot along North High Street, according to the Columbus Division of Police.
Police said they found six victims, and four more turned up at the hospital. All of the victims are males between 16 and 27 years old. Two of them are minors.
One man is in critical condition but expected to survive.
“That is very shocking, as much that goes on here with so many people and as much as you see the police out here. I wouldn’t have thought something like that would happen out here,” said Lovita Cosby, who works on North High Street.
Cosby found out about what happened the next morning at work.
“It is kinda scary now cause I leave here kind of late so now I am more a little bit alarmed,” she said.
Efforts have been made to improve safety in the Short North after a violent summer last year.
Police have increased patrols and the city has installed security cameras.
Last year the city introduced a curfew, limited street parking and limited hours for food trucks.
Jesse Beatty who owns The Joint said more needs to be done to combat violence and drug issues in the neighborhood.
“We have a customer base here we can’t abandon. We have been here 24 years on this block. If I could take everything and go, I would,” he said.
Police are still looking for a white Honda Civic that they believe the suspect took off in after the shooting.
Police chased the car to Interstate 670 but lost it near the Grandview Avenue exit.
The suspect was described as a man wearing all black.
Anyone with information on Sunday’s shooting and the suspect is asked to call Columbus Police Detective Jones at 614-645-4373 or Central Ohio Crime Stoppers at 614-645-4749.
