COLUMBUS, Ohio--Nationwide Children's Hospital CEO Dr. Steven J. Allen has announced plans for retirement.

Since 2006 Dr. Allen guided Nationwide Children’s Hospital through the most significant period of growth in its 126-year history, according to the hospital statement.

The hospital says during his tenure patient visits have doubled from 711,000 to over 1.4 million with families now traveling from every state and more than 50 countries worldwide for sub-specialty care.

Since 2012, the NCH has remained as one of the U.S. News & World Report Honor Roll of American's 10 Best Children's Hospitals.

Total philanthropic support has grown to more than $560 million while the hospital continues to introduce new programs and quality healthcare pediatrics.

The hospital has also introduced the aim of zero preventable harm in 2009 and since that time, pediatric peers across America have adopted this same approach.

Nationwide Children’s has been nationally recognized for their commitment to health care transparency and substantially reducing preventable harm by 70 percent.

Chair of Nationwide Children's Hospital Board of Directors Alex Fischer said. “His tenure at Nationwide Children’s Hospital is without question the most transformative in our history and we are gratified that he will continue to lead this organization as we complete the search for his successor.”

Dr. Allen will retire on June 30, 2019 and remain as CEO through the search for his successor and beyond as Emeritus Executive for Nationwide Children’s Hospital following his retirement.
