Nationwide Children's illuminates dozens of butterflies for holiday display

The display launched Tuesday on the hospital's south lawn along Livingston Avenue and will continue to be on display through the holiday season.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Nationwide Children's Hospital has announced the return of its "Light Up the Lawn, Light Up a Life" campaign that features dozens of light-up butterflies covering their lawn.

This marks the second year of the campaign that is designed to brighten the holidays for children hospitalized at NCH, their families and the healthcare workers at the hospital.

The display launched Tuesday on the hospital's south lawn along Livingston Avenue and will continue to be on display through the holiday season.

Every time a donation of $10 or more is made, the butterflies will illuminate. Through each donation, a unique light show is created each night for the patients and staff to enjoy.

“We were amazed by the warmth and generosity shown by the community in our inaugural year, and we are thrilled to bring back the ‘Light Up the Lawn, Light Up a Life’ campaign again this season,” said Nationwide Children's CEO Tim Robinson. “We welcomed hundreds of new donors during last year’s campaign, and every gift, of every size, makes a difference in the life of a child. Donations support everything from art therapy for patients to life-saving research and clinical care. We are so grateful for everyone who will help us spread joy to those who cannot be home for the holidays.”

Other levels of giving will fund specific opportunities – in addition to lighting the lawn – to surprise patients and staff.

  • With a $100 gift, a blue butterfly pillow and cheer card will be delivered to a patient.
  • With a $500 gift, five blue butterfly pillows and cheer cards will be delivered to five patients.
  • A $1,000 gift will sponsor an 18” (tabletop) blue butterfly, and a staff workstation will receive a holiday sweet treat basket.

Last year, holiday giving was up nearly 50%, with thousands of gifts that came in from across the country to fund research, clinical care and education and training for the next generation of pediatric healthcare providers.

Donations can be made now through Dec. 31.
