Mechanical failure likely cause in fair accident

Representatives for Amusements of America say a mechanical failure was likely the cause for ride malfunction at Ohio State Fair.

The owner of the ride that malfunctioned Wednesday at the Ohio State Fair, says a mechanical failure was likely the cause of the accident that killed one person and injured seven others.

Amusements of America released a statement that read in part:

"This is an issue with a specific ride and not the ride operator or inspectors. There is no evidence that operator error played a role in the accident. We continue to keep those affected by this tragic accident in our prayers and work cooperatively with the ongoing investigation."

Thursday, the manufacturer of the ride, KMG International, ordered that all operators of the ride Fire Ball cease operation.

The company, KMG, said Thursday in an emailed response to the Associated Press that there are 43 such rides around the world, including 11 in the United States.

Meanwhile, fair officials decided to shut down all of the rides on the Midway pending more ride inspections.

On Friday, 35 rides in the Kiddie Land area were reopened after they passed the approval process.

10TV obtained the inspection records for those rides. Of the 35 approved to reopen, three required repairs.

Parents at the fair this weekend said they were worried about allowing their kids to ride, even those approved by inspectors.

"I think we don't want to take risks like that," said Julie Marshall.

Fair officials have not yet said when or if the Midway will re-open.
