PATASKALA, Ohio — The Tunnel to Towers Foundation has announced that they have fully paid the mortgage on the Pataskala home of fallen Army Sergeant Matthew Whetnall.

Whetnall enlisted in 2006 and served active duty in the Army for nine years, and six years on reserve. During that time, he served two, year-long tours in Afghanistan.

He was hit by an IED in 2010 and suffered a brain injury. For that incident, he was awarded the Purple Heart.

He survived that attack and decided to finish up his military career. About six months after his services ended, he couldn't shake a constant headache. When he finally went to the doctor, he was given the news that he had stage four lung cancer that had spread to his brain.

On Jan. 22, 2023, Whetnall passed away as a result of the cancer.

In addition to his wife Cassandra, he left behind three children.

Cassandra said she is grateful to the foundation for allowing her to continue to raise her children in the home that her husband passed away in and where he wanted their children to grow up.

In observance of Veterans Day, the Tunnel to Towers Foundation is honoring the service and sacrifice of those who served by providing 50 mortgage-free homes across the country.
