Martin Luther King library expanding to meet community needs

Public libraries around Columbus are getting face lifts to meet current demands. Soon, one of the city’s oldest branches will get its turn.

Public libraries around Columbus are getting face lifts to meet current demands.

Soon, one of the city’s oldest branches will get its turn.

Crews will break ground on the new Martin Luther King branch October 8th.

The new library is highly anticipated by people in the area who tell 10TV it’s a lifeline for the community.

“With more technology, it’s needed because so many students don’t have the technology at home so they can always go to the library in order to use their technology,” said Tanya Scott, a preschool teacher at Mansion Day School who takes her students to the Martin Luther King branch regularly.

The new branch will be located at the southwest corner of Taylor and Long Streets. It will nearly double in size to 18,000 square feet, offer more parking, more public computers, a larger Homework Help Center, a dedicated Ready for Kindergarten area and a larger community gathering space.

“This community is one that takes lots of pride in the library and in the community,” said Keisha Gibbs, the Martin Luther King branch manager. “Our new branch is going to be able to provide more space for the community to gather and to make use of.”

The groundbreaking event starts at 2 p.m. and is open and free to the public October 8th.
