MANSFIELD, Ohio — Mansfield police fatally shot a man following a reported domestic violence incident and three-hour standoff early Saturday morning.

Officers were called to the 200 block of Cline Avenue just before 2 a.m. for a reported domestic violence incident. When officers arrived, they encountered a man with a knife at the door, police said.

The man went back into the home, which was occupied by his girlfriend and her two small children. Police said he appeared to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Hostage negotiators and the Richland County ASORT team arrived at the scene soon after to begin negotiations.

In total, police said negotiations continued for three hours. During that time, the suspect released the two children.

A short time later, police said the girlfriend attempted to escape from the man which led to officers shooting and killing the suspect.

The victim and children were not injured in the incident, according to police.

The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is investigating the incident. The identity of the suspect has not yet been released.
