Police ID man, woman found dead in suspected murder-suicide at northeast Columbus apartment

The couple's three children — ages 4, 6 and 8 — are in the care of Franklin County Children Services.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Columbus Division of Police identified a man and woman who died in an apparent murder-suicide at an apartment complex on the city's northeast side on Tuesday.

Police officers were called to the 2600 block of Lauffer Ravines Drive around 5:30 p.m. for a well-being check. Sgt. Joseph Albert said someone called for the check after noticing their neighbors' two young children waiting outside their apartment for several hours. The youngest was left waiting at a school, police say.

When officers arrived, they gained entry into the apartment with help from maintenance and found the two parents dead with apparent gunshot wounds. A gun was found inside the apartment, Albert said.

Police identified the man as 38-year-old Kathavarayan Balasubramanian and the woman as 31-year-old Sowmya Balasubramanian.

Albert said that it appears the incident was a murder-suicide and that the man is believed to have shot the woman before shooting himself.

Columbus police's homicide unit is investigating the incident. 

Franklin County Children Services located a close family friend to temporarily house the three children with.
