COLUMBUS, Ohio — A 22-year-old man accused of shooting and killing a 15-year-old in northwest Columbus two years ago pleaded guilty Wednesday, according to Franklin County Prosecuting Attorney Gary Tyack.

The prosecutor's office said Ameir Trent pleaded guilty to reckless homicide and improperly discharging a firearm into a habitation in connection to the July 2022 shooting death of Devin Bannister.

Trent was immediately sentenced to 15 to 17 years in prison, the maximum sentence possible for his charges.

On July 18, 2022, officers with the Columbus Division of Police were called on a report of a shooting on Zebulon Avenue in North Linden.

Trent and four juveniles, including Bannister, had shot more than 40 rounds into a residence with four people inside, Tyack's office said.

Trent and the juveniles were leaving the scene in a car when Trent, believing his gun was empty, fired an additional shot, which went through the front passenger seat and hit Bannister.

They dropped Bannister off at Riverside Methodist Hospital and fled the scene. He later died from his injury.
