COLUMBUS, Ohio — A man who was injured in a Columbus police shooting has sued the officer who shot him, the department and the city.
Jaylen Fisher was shot by a Columbus police officer on March 1, 2022.
Police were called to a Marathon gas station in the 3300 block of East Livingston Avenue just before 4:30 p.m. for reports of shots fired.
The lawsuit alleges that Fisher was running from a "live shooter” at the gas station when police misidentified him as the suspect and began chasing him. The lawsuit claims that Fisher was trying to surrender when the officer shot him in the back.
The lawsuit alleges that police publicly identified Fisher as a suspect in the gas station shooting; however, he was never convicted of a crime related to the incident. The lawsuit also claims that the officer used excessive force when he shot Fisher and CPD failed to properly investigate the shooting.
The lawsuit called the pursuit of Fisher and the shooting part of a “pattern” of CPD officers targeting and using excessive force against Black people.
10TV reached out to Fisher’s attorneys for comment on Tuesday but received no response. City and police officials declined to comment due to pending litigation.
