COLUMBUS, Ohio — A man who struck a pedestrian with his vehicle in west Columbus three years ago, killing them, was sentenced Monday to at least 11 years in prison.

Osman Aweys, 40, pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter in the 2021 death of a 30-year-old man. He was initially charged with murder and involuntary manslaughter, but the murder charge was dropped as part of a plea agreement.

He was sentenced to a minimum of 11 years and a maximum of 16.5 years.

The incident happened on Sept. 26, 2021, at the intersection of Sullivant Avenue and Holly Hill Road. The Columbus Division of Police received a report that someone had been hit by a vehicle.

Officers found a man in the parking lot of Country Food Store. He was taken to Grant Medical Center with serious injuries and later died.

The following day, officers found Aweys asleep in his vehicle in the 3900 block of Sullivant Avenue and arrested him.

At the time of the incident, police investigators said they had reason to believe Aweys intentionally struck the man with his car before taking off.
