Man arrested in connection to fatal shooting in Milo-Grogan neighborhood; victim ID'd

The shooting happened just after 4:30 a.m. in the 1000 block of North 9th Street on Saturday.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — A man was arrested by Columbus detectives in connection to the fatal shooting of a 21-year-old man in the Milo-Grogan neighborhood Saturday morning.

According to the Columbus Division of Police, 22-year-old Nicholas Kesterson is charged with James Shearer’s murder.

Officers were called to the 1000 block of North 9th Street just after 4:30 a.m. following reports of a shooting. Upon arrival, police located Shearer suffering from a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene at 4:50 a.m.

Police spotted a vehicle fleeing the scene. There was a brief pursuit before the driver crashed into parked cars and a fire hydrant. 

Both occupants then fled on foot but were captured by officers.

A police investigation revealed that Kesterson, who was allegedly driving the fleeing vehicle, was reportedly involved in an argument with Shearer. During the argument, he allegedly produced a handgun and shot Shearer.

The passenger in the fleeing vehicle was questioned by police and later released.
