Madison-Plains Local Schools closed for illness

Madison-Plains Local Schools in Madison County gave students the day off after dozens called off sick.

Madison-Plains Local Schools in Madison County gave students the day off after dozens called off sick.

This is the second school district in a week to do this.

The superintendent says 85 kids, 12 percent of the district, called off sick Friday. Last week, West Jefferson did the same. And two other districts have called classes due to illness since the middle of February.

Madison County epidemiologist Premal Bhatt monitors school illnesses.

“We saw an uptick from school nurses and staff sending us numbers,” Bhatt said.

Bhatt tracks what public health terms influenza-like illness. They're seeing a rise in the area. Still, they want everyone to get the flu shot. It is working.

“Actually this year’s flu shot is pretty well matched to what is circulating,” Bhatt said. “If it doesn’t prevent the flu, it helps symptoms.”

Flu season runs through April so we're still in the heart of it. The decision to close schools may be the smartest move in this situation.

“Staying home to rest when you’re sick is probably the most effective in preventing the spread,” Bhatt said.

The superintendent says the custodial crew went through and cleaned the schools. Most of the illnesses were in the elementary building.
