The decision to demolish a Dublin home led to an unimaginable discovery. The homeowners stripped away some paneling to find a piece of history.

Kevin Kemp and Jennifer Alexander bought the property on Riverside Drive for its proximity to the Scioto River. The home on the property was outdated. They decided the best option was to raze it and build a new house.

Kemp pulled a piece of paneling off a wall and made a remarkable discovery.

“I pulled on it and I said wow that looks like there’s some wood or a log there or something,” said Kemp.

It was a two-story, centuries-old log cabin. The Dublin Historical Society estimates it’s from the early 1800s. The land was originally granted to Thaddeus Kosciuszko, a decorated revolutionary war general.

Records show it changed hands a number of times, with the first documents of the home dating back to the 1850s but the belief is, the home is older.

The couple gave the whole home to the city of Dublin. The city brought in a special contractor to disassemble the cabin, log by log. The city will store the logs for a few years until it decides where to rebuild it.
