COLUMBUS, Ohio — City leaders gathered on Tuesday at Linden Park for the rededication of the Linden War Memorial.
The memorial was moved to its new location on Briarwood Avenue after officials deemed the previous site on Cleveland Avenue no longer viable or accessible to veterans.
Columbus leaders said the previous location was also dangerous for the structure as it had been hit by several vehicles in recent years.
Mayor Andrew Ginther, Columbus City Councilmembers Nancy Day-Achauer and Emmanuel Remy and several veterans and active-duty members were present for the rededication ceremony.
“Our veterans deserve our utmost respect and gratitude for defending our safety and the freedoms we cherish,” said Ginther. “While no monument or memorial can ever bring back the loved ones we’ve lost, we must continue to ensure their lives and sacrifices are never forgotten – and properly honor their legacy in ways that are befitting their service, bravery and courage.”
The memorial honors Linden veterans who gave the ultimate sacrifice to their country.
It was initially dedicated in 1919 and went through several stages of care and expansion on Cleveland Avenue. As the area began to grow and the memorial was damaged, it required a safer home, the city said.
In 2022, efforts to move and restore the monument began and the stone pieces that were lost over the years were tracked down. Then, in May 2024, $90,000 was approved for its relocation and restoration.
