LANCASTER, Ohio — The Lancaster Police Department has added a new four-legged friend to its team.
The department announced that K-9 Barry and his handler, officer Chandler Evanichko, returned from their training Tuesday morning.
The department shared on Facebook that Barry, a 14-month-old Belgian Malinois, was welcomed home by local residents who gifted him with a bulletproof vest.
"Greg and Andrea [Riffle] graciously reached out to the Lancaster Police Department and asked how they could help our K9 Unit. Just by chance, K9 Barry was getting ready to graduate from his schooling, and they offered to pay for his bulletproof vest," the post read.
The Lancaster Citizen Police Academy Alumni Association accepted the donation.
“We are once again thankful for the generosity of our community to ensure the safety and protection of our furry officers,” the department said.
Anyone interested in donating to the department’s K-9 Unit is asked to contact Sgt. Chuck Sims at 740-687-6680 Ext. 4518.
