Chief: Woman dead following house fire near Lancaster

The fire happened in the 2600 block of Mud House Road NE near Valley View Road NE around 6:40 a.m.

LANCASTER, Ohio — A woman is dead after a fire broke out at a home in Lancaster Wednesday morning.

The fire happened in the 2600 block of Mud House Road NE near Valley View Road NE around 6:40 a.m.

Pleasant Township Fire Chief Michael Hutton said firefighters found the woman a minute after they entered the home. They got her out of the home and attempted life-saving measures, but she was pronounced dead at the scene. Her identity has not been released.

Hutton said when the call first came in, a sheriff’s deputy who lives down the street from the home went to help.

“He confirmed there was a house fire here and tried to make entry in the house. It was unsuccessful at the time due to the heat,” said Hutton.

Hutton said it was challenging for firefighters to get into the home.

“This house is what we refer to as a high content house which has a lot of property in it. (It was like) a maze going through it, that created quite a lot of problems,” he said.

A neighbor said she did not know much about the woman living in the home.

“I feel so sorry for the lady,” said Glady Wright.

Wright said when she woke up this morning, she couldn’t believe what happened.

“When I got up, the street was blocked off and you couldn't get out even my driveway,” she said.

Details about what caused the fire were not immediately available. Investigators believe the fire may have started in the kitchen, but are still working to confirm.

The state fire marshal and the coroner are at the scene as the investigation continues.
