COLUMBUS, Ohio — A group of kayakers found human remains Saturday while in a river in Athens County, according to the sheriff’s office.

Deputies were called to the Hocking River off River Road in Guysville around 7:20 p.m. on a report of human remains being discovered.

The sheriff's office says a group of kayakers led the deputies to the remains. Authorities searched the area but didn’t find any additional evidence.

The remains were recovered by the Richland Area and Rome Township fire departments.

While information on the case is limited, authorities say the remains were determined to be that of an adult male wearing blue jeans, a brown belt and brown boots.

“The specific description of the decedent does not correspond with any active cases or recently reported missing persons,” Sheriff Rodney Smith said.

The Athens County Coroner’s Office and sheriff’s office are working to identify the remains. Anyone with information is asked to contact Captain Bryan Cooper at 740-566-4309 or bcooper@athenssheriff.com.
