Police arrest teen accused of stabbing another teen near Hilliard

Hilliard City Schools closed four elementary schools Monday because of the incident.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Police arrested a 13-year-old boy accused of stabbing another teen at a school bus stop Monday morning in a neighborhood near Hilliard.

Officers with the Columbus Division of Police were called to Springdale Boulevard and Bathgate Street, located west of Walcutt Road, around 7:20 a.m.

 According to court records, a 13-year-old Heritage Middle School boy walked up to another 13-year-old boy at the bus stop and stabbed him multiple times.

Police said the injured teen was taken to Nationwide Children’s Hospital and he is expected to be OK.

The search for the suspect lasted several hours. Multiple schools went on lockdown during as police looked for the teen and Hilliard City Schools closed Crossing, Scioto Darby, Beacon and J.W. Reason elementary schools. Dismissal for all other schools went on as normal and all after-school activities continued as planned.

Hilliard and Columbus police say the 13-year-old suspect was arrested near a Sunoco gas station and Nasty's Sports Bar and Restaurant on Scioto Darby Road. He was charged with felonious assault.

On Tuesday, the Franklin County Juvenile Court magistrate said the 13-year-old boy was a threat to public safety and ordered him stay here at the juvenile intervention center until his next hearing.

Hilliard Superintendent David Stewart issued the following update to families Monday afternoon:

We want to extend our heartfelt thanks to our entire community for your concern and support for our students and staff during today’s incident. We are incredibly proud of our students and staff for their calm and responsible actions—they followed all safety protocols and handled the situation with great composure. We are also deeply grateful to our local first responders for their quick response and assistance in ensuring everyone’s safety.

The plan for tomorrow across all our schools will be business as usual. While the situation has been resolved, we understand that some students may still feel unsettled. If your child needs additional support, please don’t hesitate to reach out to our counselors or your student’s teacher. We are here to help.
