The family of 39-year-old LaToya Carpenter is still seeking justice three years after she was shot and killed while driving.
“I don’t want her to be swept up under the rug, I want people to remember her name. Her name was LaToya Carpenter and we deserve justice,” said her sister, Danyelle Carpenter.
LaToya was in the wrong place at the wrong time.
She was near a vigil for Jarrin Hickman, who was killed at the location a year before, when someone in a dark colored Durango fired shots at the crowd. Latoya was caught in the crossfire and shot twice in the head.
Five people at the vigil were injured, including a 12-year-old.
Three years later, investigators at the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office said the case has gone cold.
Investigators shared video of the Durango involved in the shooting, but no arrests were ever made.
Danyelle believes someone knows something.
“It is not fair to us, because it is hard, it is hard on her daughters, it is hard on her sisters, her brothers, it is hard because it is a piece of us missing that shouldn’t have been gone already,” she said.
Sequoya Carpenter happened to be driving behind her mom when she was shot. They had nothing to do with the vigil.
“When you come to the realization that someone is gone you don’t know how to feel, you feel sad, angry, upset, you just question the Lord on why things like this happen to people who are innocent,” she said.
Three years later, Sequoya has her own daughter and mourns the grandmother her mom would be.
“It just makes me feel upset because I feel like the world is very careless it is very cruel,” she said.
