Inmate who escaped from Champaign County jail caught in New York

MECHANICSBURG, Ohio - The Champaign County Sheriff's Office said an inmate who escaped from the Tri-County Regional Jail in Mechanicsburg in April was caught in New York.

The sheriff's office said 40-year-old Staling Santos-Reyes was apprehended in Brooklyn on May 31.

Santos-Reyes escaped from the jail on April 27.

He was initially in the Tri-County Regional Jail on charges of possession of criminal tools and possession of drugs.

According to a criminal complaint filed in federal court, Santos-Reyes was pulled over on I-70 in Madison County by an Ohio State Highway Patrol trooper on February 7 when the trooper noticed a lane violation.

The complaint said nearly four kilograms of heroin were found during the traffic stop.

According to the criminal complaint, Santos-Reyes was working outside when the jumped the jail's perimeter fencing to escape.

The court records also allege a woman whom Santos-Reyes was talking with on the phone while in jail advised him to go to Mexico to avoid potential punishment in Madison County.
