COLUMBUS, Ohio — Human remains were found along the edge of the Ohio River in Scioto County Saturday afternoon, according to Portsmouth Deputy Chief of Police Jason Hedrick.
Officers with the Portsmouth Police Department were notified around 2:30 p.m. that someone discovered human remains on the Ohio riverfront, east of the Offnere Street river access within city limits.
When officers arrived, they confirmed that there was someone dead along the river’s edge.
Investigators with the police department were called to process the scene and the Portsmouth Fire Department and medics assisted in the recovery of the remains.
The Scioto County Coroner’s Office took the remains to the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office for an autopsy, according to police.
Police said the person who was found was in an advanced state of decomposition. Their identity has not yet been determined.
