ASHLAND -- Crews began to demolish the vacant home that was once a crime scene of two murdered women and another woman who was held captive in Ashland County.
According to the Mansfield News Journal, demolition started at 8 a.m. Tuesday on Covert Court as residents cheered crews while they brought down pieces of the structure.
The home located at 363 Covert Street was torn apart by a backhoe removing the horrific memories of a kidnapping and double murder executed by convicted killer Shawn Grate.
A judge accepted the jury’s recommendation of the death penalty for the convicted Ashland killer.
Grate was found guilty of aggravated murder in the deaths of 29-year-old Elizabeth Griffith and 43-year-old Stacey Stanley in Ashland County.
He was arrested in September 2016 after police found the women's remains in what was supposed to be a vacant Ashland home on Covert Court. Once in custody, Grate, admitted to killing two other women but he has not been charged in those killings.
Police also looked into whether he was connected to the 2015 death of a fifth woman.
Grate previously pleaded guilty to 15 counts that included rape and abuse of a corpse.
