14-year-old Marion boy dies after horse and buggy crashes into train

A spokesperson for CSX said the crash occurred as the train was moving through the crossing near Marion-Hardin Road intersecting County Road 22 in La Rue.

MARION, Ohio — A 14-year-old boy was killed after the horse and buggy he was driving crashed into the side of a train in Marion County Wednesday evening, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

OSHP says the crash happened around 4:40 p.m. on County Road 5. 

Edward Gingerich, of Marion, was driving a horse and buggy northbound on County Road 5 when he lost control, OSHP said. 

At the same time, a CSX locomotive was traveling eastbound when the carriage struck the side of the train, ejecting Gingerich.

A spokesperson for CSX said the crash occurred as the train was moving through the crossing near Marion-Hardin Road intersecting County Road 22 in the town of La Rue.

First responders pronounced Gingerich dead at the scene.

A CSX spokesperson provided the following statement to 10TV:

"CSX extends its deepest sympathies to everyone impacted by this tragedy, and we will work on scene to support local law enforcement as they continue to investigate.”

The crash remains under investigation.
