As home security systems like Ring, Canary and Nest become more popular, local police agencies say the devices are playing a big role in solving burglary cases.
Sergeant Kristopher Settles with the Hilliard Police Department says as the technology continues to improve and become cheaper, his agency is seeing more burglary reports being paired with home surveillance video.
“We have residents calling us in real time saying 'I just watched UPS or whomever drop a package at my house and I just watched a white truck pull up and' — give a description — 'walk up to my porch and steal the package in real time,'” Sgt. Settles said. “It allows us to respond immediately whereas in the past, we were 10-15 minutes behind and they’ve already moved on to the next subdivision.”
This member of law enforcement advises if someone does capture a theft on camera, they should alert police before posting it to social media.
