Home in southeast Columbus destroyed after fire

Firefighters were able to get the flames under control very quickly.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — A fire has destroyed a home in the southeast part of the city.

The Columbus Division of Fire says the fire happened in the 3000 block of Huntington Drive. A call about the fire was received Sunday around 11:15 a.m.

Officials say the fire began outside the home in the carport and spread into the house.

Michael Harper, a passerby, told 10TV said there was an effort to get the residents out of the house after they had gone in to retrieve possessions.

"We finally got them out and got them away from the house. After that, the carport started to explode, you could hear the electrical wires starting to snap. Smoke quickly filled the house," he said.

Firefighters were able to get the flames under control quickly.

No injuries have been reported.

The street around the house is currently shut down while authorities investigate to determine what caused the fire.

It appears the home is a total loss.
