Police giving out free steering wheel locks to Kia owners in Hilliard, Norwich Township

Kia owners in the Hilliard or Norwich Township are eligible to receive the anti-theft device free from the police station.

HILLIARD, Ohio — To combat the rise in Kia thefts, the Hilliard Division of Police is giving away free steering wheel locks.

Kia owners in the Hilliard or Norwich Township are eligible to receive the anti-theft device free from the police station. According to the city, the locks are available to residents with a Kia manufactured between 2011 and 2021 that do not have a proximity key entry or push-button start.

Even if the car is broken into, police say this device helps immobilize it.

When Kia’s are broken into, criminals typically have a USB that they inserted into the column where the ignition was removed. Vehicles without a push-start are easy targets for this technique.

The city asks that those who want a free steering wheel lock bring the Kia to the station and provide proof of registration. Only one device is allowed per vehicle.

You can schedule an appointment to pick the device up by contacting Officer Deaton at 614-334-2487 or by emailing mdeaton@hilliardohio.gov.

Below are additional tips on how to protect your vehicle from theft:

  • Park in a garage or well-lit areas
  • Keep doors locks
  • Remove valuables from the car
  • Activate alarm systems
  • Report suspicious activity to law enforcement
