A Perry County 18-year-old is holding a dual role not many can claim—high school student and elected official.
"I think that it's going to be great. I'm really excited for it,” said newly-elected village council member Olivia Newbold.
Newbold in many ways is a typical Sheridan High School senior--she is active in sports and clubs--but now she is also a full-fledged politician.
The 18-year-old won a seat on village council last week after running unopposed.
"I saw a need in my community to represent my generation inside our village government,” she said.
With a background in student government, Newbold says she has had a passion for politics since middle school.
"It's always been something that I thought that I could do to make a difference,” she said.
Newbold says part of her focus will be on improving parks and rec and also the environment.
She has plans to fix the community’s sand volleyball courts and obtain a grant for sidewalk repair and expansion.
Residents say they look forward to her ideas.
"We need some fresh, new ideas I guess so good for her,” said Thornville resident Lisa Reiter.
Thorn Township resident Wayne Roach said he voted for Newbold and thinks there should be more residents like her.
"It's wonderful,” Roach said. “I like to see young people get involved in politics."
Being involved in politics is something Newbold says she would like to do for a long time.
"I definitely see myself in public service. To what capacity really depends on the opportunities given to me,” she said.
For now, she's making the most of this opportunity in her hometown.
