Heavy rains cause flooding in Mansfield

One driver tried to drive through the flood water and needed to be towed to safety.

Park Avenue East near downtown Mansfield was closed for most of Thursday as 3 feet of water flooded the lowest level of the street.

While a barricade blocked cars from getting near the flooded area, a side street was left unblocked.

That's the road where Howard Palmer drove down with his wife in the passenger seat of the pick-up truck.

He said he was in a deep conversation regarding his wife's pregnancy and became distracted and didn't realize the street he was about to drive on was under a lot of water.

As he made his was under the underpass his truck got stuck so he called for help. The good news is the truck belonged to his brother-in-law who owns a local tow truck company.

He rushed to the scene to pull his pick-up and along with his brother-in-law and sister-in-law out of the flood water.

The city’s storm drains were no match from the constant water.

Joe Reindl's alignment shop sits just outside the worst flooding.

"For us who've lived here all our lives it's not bad," he said.

He said the three feet of water that sits on top of Park Avenue East once crested near his shop about 50 yards from where he's standing about six years ago.

Heavy rains forced at least a dozen basements to flood. One homeowner on Hillgrove Street showed us her basement that was flooded from a backed-up sewage line.

The rain swelled creeks already clogged with debris, turned road side ditches into streams, and made streets impassable because of standing water.

"They've re-done the drainage and it's helped, but this is mother nature at her finest," Reindl said.

The national weather service says about 1.25 inches of rain was recorded in Mansfield. A flood warning remains in effect here throughout the Thursday night.
