Police searching for 15-year-old student who brought stolen handgun to Eastmoor Academy

The student was reported through an anonymous tip just before 11:30 a.m., according to a Columbus City Schools spokesperson.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Columbus Division of Police is searching for a 15-year-old boy who reportedly brought a loaded handgun to Eastmoor Academy High School Thursday morning.

A spokesperson with Columbus City Schools told 10TV that the district received an anonymous tip about the student just before 11:30 a.m. The tip claimed the student may have had a weapon that he showed to other students.

The high school was placed on an “elevated security level” and the district’s safety and security staff and Columbus police were notified.

Just before 11:40 a.m., officers arrived at Eastmoor Academy and met with security staff and school personnel who had the student detained in the office. Police say the student was able to run away from custody and left behind his backpack.

The school staff and security found a Glock 9mm semi-auto pistol inside the backpack, according to police. The weapon was loaded with one round of ammunition in the chamber and nine rounds in the extended magazine.

Police say the weapon was reported stolen out of Martin County, Florida.

Detectives issued an arrest warrant for the student, who is charged with possession and conveying firearms in a school safety zone, carrying a concealed weapon and receiving stolen property.

Police did not release a description of what the student looked like.

If you have any information, you are asked to call Columbus police.
