Grand jury decides to not charge Columbus police officer who shot suspect following 2023 traffic stop

Jamie Overstreet was shot and killed by the officer after he reportedly pulled out a weapon while being chased by police following a traffic stop in south Columbus.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — A Franklin County grand jury declined to indict a Columbus police officer who shot and killed a suspect last year who had multiple warrants for his arrest for violating a protection order.

Jamie Overstreet, 36, was shot and killed by the officer after he reportedly pulled out a weapon while being chased by police following a traffic stop in south Columbus on Aug. 24, 2023.

In its decision-making process, the grand jury determines whether a crime was committed and if any degree of unlawful criminal homicide occurred.

Officers with the Columbus Division of Police were called to Rendezvous Lane near Lockbourne Road to search for Overstreet. Police spotted the suspect leaving the area in a vehicle and initiated a traffic stop. Overstreet did not stop and fled the area. Columbus police said officers stopped following the vehicle.

A Columbus police helicopter later found Overstreet’s vehicle and began following it. Overstreet had struck another vehicle while driving.

The vehicle stopped on Marion Drive North in southeast Columbus where Overstreet got out of the vehicle and began running away from the area. Officers found the suspect and chased after him.

While he was running, police said Overstreet pulled out a firearm. One of the officers fired five rounds, striking Overstreet once.

Overstreet was taken to a hospital where he later died.

Columbus police did not release the officer’s identity citing Marsy’s Law, but police did say that the officer had been with the division for three years at the time.
