FRANKLIN COUNTY, Ohio — A major internet outage affecting Microsoft is disrupting flights, banks, media outlets and companies across the world, with problems continuing hours after the technology company said it was gradually fixing an issue affecting access to Microsoft 365 apps and services.
Airlines and airports in the United States, Europe, Australia, India and elsewhere were reporting problems, with some flights grounded. Retail outlets, banks, railway companies and hospitals in several parts of the world were also affected by what appeared to be an unprecedented internet disruption.
Long queues have formed at many airports around the world as the global internet outage hit check-in procedures for flights — although in some locations, systems were now back online. Some flights at John Glenn Columbus International Airport have been grounded because of system issues.
Here are the other services that have been disrupted in the Columbus area.
- In Columbus, city government resource websites are down, including the police and fire divisions.
- The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office said that its website is down and employees are temporarily using pen and paper to take down reports, causing some delays. The 911 Communication Center is not affected by the outage.
- The Ohio State University said several services have been impacted. While the extent of the disrupted services is still not known, the university says many Windows computers must be restarted.
- The Franklin County Domestic Relations and Juvenile Court is closed Friday because of the outage.
- The Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles said some BMV and title services may not be available.
- Nationwide Children's Hospital says it is experiencing technical difficulties, but patient care continues with backup procedures in place.
- Mount Carmel Health Systems has seen minimal impact from the outage with some workstations impacted by Wndiwos.
- OhioHealth says Southeastern Medical Center was impacted, but services were restored. There were no radiology reading, but it didn't impact patient care. All surgeries proceedings continued as scheduled.
- The Ohio Department of Administrative Services says it is working to restore outages to some agencies, like the Department of Job and Family Services and the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio.
- The Columbus Museum of Art is offering free admission until 5 p.m. Friday because it experienced issues from the outage.
