Gahanna Police Lieutenant Dan Williams resigned last month while under investigation for theft in office.
Williams was placed on administrative leave back in April for allegations of potential misconduct. An internal affairs investigation conducted by Gahanna Police with the assistance of Columbus Division of police found evidence that Williams was not at work during a substantial amount of time he was being paid.
Willams, a 20-year veteran with Gahanna Police, officially resigned July 28.
City of Gahanna issued the following Statement:
Earlier this year, allegations of misconduct by Lt. Daniel Williams were brought to the attention of the City of Gahanna administration by fellow officers of the Gahanna Division of Police. Upon further review of the information received, the administration determined that an outside independent agency should conduct an investigation to ensure a fair and transparent process. The City initiated a mutual aid request to the Columbus Division of Police (CPD) Internal Affairs Bureau which agreed to conduct the investigation.
The evidence collected during the course of the investigation by CPD determined that sufficient evidence existed to support that Williams falsified public documents and time records related to hours for which he received compensation. Prior to the conclusion of the investigation, Williams voluntarily resigned from his position with the City on July 28, 2016. If Williams had not resigned his position he would have been subject to disciplinary action including but not limited to dismissal. In addition, he agreed to pay restitution to the City for hours identified as paid but not worked.
The City is currently reviewing its policies and procedures in an effort to ensure transparency and accountability.
The City of Gahanna is appreciative of the members of the Gahanna Division of Police who demonstrated leadership in stepping forward to share their concerns to maintain the integrity of our city. We are also grateful for the assistance provided by the Columbus Division of Police Internal Affairs Bureau.
