GAHANNA, Ohio — Gahanna Lincoln High School closed on Wednesday after a gas line broke at the construction site of the new high school.

Around 8:15 a.m., the Gahanna Division of Police said high school students were evacuated to a safe spot in front of the building after learning about the gas line break.

The district said students already at the building would be dismissed to return home. Students who are still on buses will also be taken back home.

Havens Corners Road was closed between Hamilton Road and Helmbright Road. Police said the gas leak had been contained and the road had reopened.

"We acknowledge the disruption to the morning rush hour, however, maintaining access to the construction site for first responders and keeping students and the public safe is always our top priority," a district's spokesperson said.

The district anticipates that operations at the high school will return to normal on Thursday.

The school district said middle school buses will be significantly late because of the issue.
