Gahanna elementary school student unknowingly brings gun, ammunition to class

The incident is under investigation.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — A Gahanna elementary school student unknowingly brought a gun to school on Wednesday, according to the district.

According to a letter sent to parents, a High Point Elementary school student told their teacher about an item in their backpack. The student unknowingly was carrying a gun with ammunition. The district learned the weapon came from the child's home.

The school administration removed the gun from the classroom and called authorities. A Gahanna Division of Police School Resource Officer responded, secured the gun and deemed there was no threat.

"We are proud of the student who came forward to report this when realizing the firearm was in the backpack. It is important for our school community to say something if they see something concerning," the district wrote in the letter.

The incident is under investigation.
