FRANKLIN COUNTY, Ohio — More students are heading back to the classroom this week, which means more school zones will be active.
Deputies with the Franklin County Sheriff's Office are increasing patrols in school zones across the county, but especially in high problem areas.
Last school year, deputies issued more violations in areas off around Blacklick Elementary in Jefferson Township and off Norton Road, in front of the elementary and middle school.
"We had some issues there, a lot of faster speeders up to 58 miles per hour in a 20 mile per hour school zone, so just show some patience with the school buses and the kids!" said Captain Ed Schillig.
If you are caught speeding in a school zone, it is typically a mandatory court appearance. Fines typically range more than $200.
"You're looking at a pretty good fine! Most judges don't look too kindly on it. And anything over 16 miles per hour, which would be 36 in a school zone, is a must appear. So you're not able to just pay the ticket and go about your day. No, you have to show up to court for that," said Captain Schillig.
Last school year, deputies also noticed an increase in the number of distracted drivers in school zones.
