ATHENS, Ohio — The former president of an Ohio University fraternity pleaded guilty to charges in connection to the hazing-related death of Collin Wiant.
Elijah Wahib pleaded guilty to counts of obstructing justice, permitting drug abuse and hazing.
Wahib was the president of the Sigma Pi fraternity when Wiant died in 2018. A coroner ruled Wiant died from asphyxiation due to nitrous oxide ingestion.
The judge ordered Wahib to complete a drug and alcohol diversion program for the felonies and was sentenced to 31 days in jail for the misdemeanors.
Wahib is the fifth former member of the fraternity to plead guilty related to Waint’s death:
- Dominic Figliola – Permitting drug abuse, hazing, aggravated tracking of drugs and failure to comply with underage alcohol laws
- Zachary Herskovitz – Permitting drug abuse, hazing
- Cullen McLaughlin – Trafficking in LSD, possession of LSD
- Saxon Angell-Perez – Permitting drug abuse, hazing and trafficking in cocaine
None of the four received jail time. All of them were ordered to complete the drug and alcohol diversion program.
Four others were indicted in connection with Wiant’s death:
- Joshua Androsac – Permitting drug abuse, hazing, involuntary manslaughter, two counts of trafficking in harmful intoxicants, trafficking in cocaine
- Corbin Gustafson – Reckless homicide
- James Wanke – Two counts of Involuntary manslaughter, two counts of trafficking in harmful intoxicants and improperly dispensing or distributing nitrous oxide
- Stephan Lewis – Trafficking in harmful intoxicants and improperly dispensing or distributing nitrous oxide
