Former Columbus anchor Doug Adair has died at 89

Doug Adair, a longtime news anchor in Ohio, passed away Monday.

He passed away peacefully alongside family at his home in Pleasanton, California, according to his tribute page for the Alzheimer’s Association.

Born May 29, 1929, in Xenia, Ohio, Adair began his broadcast career in Dayton after graduating from Northwestern University and serving in the United States Air Force during the Korean War.

In 1958, the Emmy Award-winning journalist joined WJW-TV in Cleveland as a reporter and anchor. He joined WKYC-TV in Cleveland in 1973 as a co-anchor and eventually came to Columbus for WCMH-TV in 1983. He retired in 1994.

During his life, the Ohio Broadcasters Hall of Fame member won several awards for his work and service to the community, including the Faith of Freedom Award and the Catholic Church's National Gabriel Award for his series, "The Crisis in Christianity."

He also received the Bishop’s Award of the Episcopal Church and was named Cleveland's Outstanding Citizen by the Holy Name Society after his “Clothes for Christmas” campaign.

Calling hours for Adair are 10:45 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. June 1 with services to follow at St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church, 9549 Highland Drive in Brecksville, Ohio. the Columbus Dispatch reports. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association through Adair’s tribute page.
