9-year-old girl becomes first child in Ohio to die from the flu this season

ODH reported the number of hospitalizations is below the five-year average for this time of year.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — A 9-year-old girl from Clermont County is the first child to die from the flu this season, Ohio Department of Health officials said in a release. Clermont County Public Health is investigating the death.

Flu activity often peaks between December and February in Ohio. Since the season started, more than 900 influenza-related hospitalizations have been reported in the state.

ODH reported the number of hospitalizations is below the five-year average for this time of year. There were 29 hospitalizations as of Dec. 23 in central Ohio.

Each year, Ohio typically reports between one and six pediatric deaths that are flu-associated.

ODH Director Dr. Bruce Vanderhoff encourages those who have not yet received a flu vaccine to get one.

“We are in the heart of flu season, and a vaccine may help prevent you or your loved ones from contracting a serious case of the disease,” Vanderhoff said.

Those interested in getting the vaccine can visit most healthcare providers’ offices, local health departments and retail pharmacies.

Another effective way to help prevent the flu and its spread is washing hands frequently, covering coughs and sneezes with tissues or by coughing and sneezing into elbows. ODH also suggested avoiding touching the eyes, mouth and nose and staying home when sick.
