First 3D printed home in Columbus still being built; what it looks like now

The goal is to have the home completed as soon as possible but there is no definitive date.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Progress on the first 3D-printed home in Columbus continues.

The project is being done in collaboration with the city of Columbus and the goal is to use the new technology and bring more affordable housing options to the area. The model home is located in South Linden.

Ohio contractor Mayo Makinde said the 3D-printed part of the home is complete. Now it just needs windows, doors, roofing, plumbing, electrical and mechanical systems.

The home was slated to be completed by the end of August or September, but Makinde said with new ventures come some learning curves.

“I understood why it took so long,  but initially we didn't think it was gonna take that long ourselves. There’s only like three or four companies that manufacture this concrete substance in the United States,” said Makinde.

Makinde said a delay in getting the specific concrete mix and the extreme drought causing the concrete to dry and crack set the process back.

The goal is to have the home completed as soon as possible but there is no definitive date.

Makinde said he’s hopeful it will be finished by the end of September.
