COLUMBUS, Ohio — A teenage girl died following a fiery two-vehicle crash in west Columbus on Tuesday.
The crash happened at the intersection of West Mound Street and South Highland Avenue in the South Central Hilltop neighborhood just before 12:30 p.m.
According to the Columbus Division of Fire, one of the vehicles involved caught on fire.
Police said a brown Hyundai Sonata and a silver Lincoln MKC were traveling east on West Mound Street when they collided with each other.
One person, identified by police as 14-year-old Haleigh Abshire, was pulled out of one of the vehicles and taken to Grant Medical Center in critical condition where she later died.
A pedestrian, who Columbus police say is a juvenile, was also taken to Nationwide Children’s Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Police say multiple people fled the scene.
Police sources say a Hyundai was stolen from West High School and was involved in the crash. Columbus City Schools confirms a Hyundai Sonata was stolen from their parking lot just before the crash.
Witness Luis Irizary said he saw a girl limping, trying to run away from the crash and saw three teenage boys also running from the scene.
"It's so sad that the people who caused the accident leave the scene and are not responsible for what they did. I saw there were three kids, they were teenagers," he said.
Anyone with information about the crash or the individuals who fled the scene is asked to contact the Accident Investigation Unit at 614-645-4767. Anyone who wants to remain anonymous can contact Central Ohio Crime Stoppers at 614-461-8477.
