Father dies days after protecting daughter in crash

On Dec. 7, his sister said, Jorge "Alonso" Garcia was hit by a car while walking to the store with his 2-year-old daughter.

DENVER — A Denver family is left to grieve after their loved one died, days after being hit by a car.

Family members identified the victim as Jorge "Alonso" Garcia.

"He loved watching football every Sunday. He was a very big Broncos fan. He loved his mother very much. He would always help her whenever he can," his sister Karla Alanis said.

On Dec. 7, Alanis said, her brother was hit by a car while walking to the store with his 2-year-old daughter. Alanis said he saw the car and pushed his daughter's stroller out of the way to keep her from getting hurt.

"He didn’t have a father in his life so he always made sure he was going to be there for her and do everything that his father didn’t do before him," Alanis said. "He loved his daughter very much and he was going to do anything for her."

Alanis said her brother was rushed to the hospital with a number of injuries, including broken ribs, a fractured ankle and a torn ACL. She said he was released from the hospital just a day and a half after the crash. About two days after that, Alanis found him unresponsive.

"I gave him CPR for seven minutes, tried to help him, kept talking. I was like, 'Don't do this. Wake up. Wake up. Your daughter's still waiting for you,'" she said as she began to cry. "I just wish I could give him one more hug. Tell him I loved him one more time. But all I have are memories now."

Denver Police said the driver stayed on scene and was cited for careless driving resulting in injury and no proof of insurance. When asked if the charges would be upgraded, they said the medical examiner's office will determine the cause of death, and in the meantime it's still under investigation.

Alanis wonders, what now?

"What's going to happen to the driver?" she asked. "What's his daughter going to think? What are we going to tell her when she asks for her dad?"

These are questions Alanis doesn't know how to answer. All she knows is that while this Christmas is not worth celebrating, family always will be.

"Tell them you love them one more time because you never know when it's going to be the last," she said.
