Driver id'd in hit & run crash that killed young mother (UPDATE)

According to Columbus police, Amy Stewart was crossing the six-lane intersection at Brice Road when she was hit.

UPDATE: On Tuesday, Columbus police identified the driver suspected of leaving the scene and the vehicle has been impounded. 10TV is not identifying the driver because they have not been charged with a crime and no arrest has been made thus far.

At just 21 years old, Amy Stewart was a young woman wading into adulthood and parenthood at the same time.

"It was just beautiful to see how excited she was,” Stewart’s boyfriend Robert Kleintank said. “And that made me more excited. Scared to death, but excited."

Kleintank said the two have been close since their freshman year of high school in Fairfield, Ohio. A few years ago, friendship turned to love.

"Just young adults trying to get our lives together, facing this tough, cruel world," he said.

Monday morning that world turned much crueler.

Kleintank said he and Amy were walking from the Knights Inn to the BP on Brice Road just before sunrise Monday morning.

He said Stewart was trailing behind him when she tried to cross.

"I don't know if the car didn't see her, or…just hit her, and then another car came along and ran her over,” he said. “I looked back and they were both stopped getting out of their cars, and I was like, ‘Ok they're stopping’. Then they just took off. At that point, I was standing in the road in front of her so that no more cars hit her."

Kleintank believes the drivers realized they’d hit someone.

“They got out of their vehicle, and they looked back at us," he said.

Amy died at the scene. Their son is far too young to understand right now, but Kleintank knows what he'll tell him about his mother.

"She was wonderful, beautiful, loved him to death,” he said. “[She was a] great mother that unfortunately got taken away from both of us."

To the drivers who hit her, he said: "Just come forward, please. Say what happened. It was an accident. It's nothing you did on purpose, it was an accident. Just tell us. Please tell somebody."

One of the vehicles that hit Stewart is described as a silver van or SUV, with visible front end damage.
