Fairfield Area Humane Society to take in 120 dogs from Vinton County resident

The Fairfield Area Humane Society is going to take in dozens of dogs from a rescue situation in Vinton County.

LANCASTER, Ohio - Working in a humane society is a calling. It has to be.

At the Fairfield Area Humane Society, the sound of dogs barking is a sound of new beginnings for the four-legged friends.

Most of the dogs, Monday, were brought in because of a different call.

"They gave us a call and said 'Hey, can you help this lady, we just don't have the resources for it'," Corey Schoonover said.

Schoonover, who is the executive director of the humane society, says he didn't know what to expect when he was notified about a woman in Vinton County who needed help with her dogs.

"We feel like we're helping the lady as much as we're helping the animals," Schoonover said. "Which is different than a lot of the humane cases that you see on TV or you see what we're dealing with."

Schoonover says the woman was taking care of her pets the best she could, but it was getting to be too much for her.

Schoonover says, on average, the Fairfield Area Humane Society takes in about 40 rescue dogs every month. In the last three weeks, they've taken in 75 and more are on the way.

"There's probably another 70 or so that we are still going to be getting," he said.

The Vinton County resident had about 120 dogs, according to Schoonover. He says 40 of those dogs have been brought in, cleaned up, spayed or neutered and have already been adopted thanks, in part, by word-of-mouth on social media.

"We have people coming in, inquiring from as far away as Michigan and Pennsylvania," he said.

Schoonover says the humane society will continue to go back to Vinton County as more dogs are adopted and space opens up until all dogs have been rescued.
